If trekking has made you crave for more adventure, Mera Peak (6476m) in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal is not only a test of your climbing skills but also a prime viewpoint for the array of soaring mountains in the region. The easiest peak to climb in Nepal, not requiring technical skills, is located east of Lukla between the Hinku and Hongu valleys. The first section of the trek to Mera Peak follows the classic route taken by the early expeditions to Everest. From Kathmandu, we drive on the scenic high- way to Tibet and turn right at Lamosan- gu towards Jiri, the tailhead. Jiri at 1860m is a terrace of houses cascading down on a hillside. Another pleasant village on the way is Junbesi. It is a picturesque Sherpa settlement with Numbur peak (6959 m) towering above it. There is also a school built by Sir Edmund Hillary.

If most trekking trails in Nepal have a north-south orientation, this route goes east-west with few high-altitude ups and downs. The village of Pangum (2850m) contains a traditional paper factory, popularly called rice paper, but actually made from the bark of the daphne bush. The trek to Mera Peak is a detour from the popular route up Khumbu. The scenic rewards are tremendous with a panorama of the world's highest mountains (Mt. Everest, Mt.Lhotse, Amadablam, Makalu, Baruntse & Kanchenjunga) spread out before you. And then there is the feeling of accomplishment of having climbed a Himalayan peak.
